Frequently Asked Questions

What is Worldspinner?

Worldspinner makes it easy to create your own richly detailed fantasy world in minutes, including continents, mountain ranges, cultures, kingdoms, cities, and more. Then, delve as deeply as you like into customizing your world. You can create beautiful maps without spending hours with paint tools, and without needing to be an artist.  Worldspinner is a tool, not a game. It doesn’t replace your creativity, but multiplies it. It is hosted online, so you don’t need to download anything and it is available anywhere.

Why doesn’t the online display look like the final maps?

The final artistic style for your world map is applied in the last step of the process, when you create your map. While you spin your world, you will be able to interact with a number of different views, to see your world on a nation, culture, and biome level.

What is the licensing like? Can I create a map to go with my novel?

Yes. When you create a map with Worldspinner, you can use it however you like including in books, on websites, and other projects.

Can I specify where the landmasses, mountains, rivers, etc go on the map?

For the first version, you can control some broad parameters like amount of land vs. water, temperature, and prevalent biomes, but not directly control the topology beyond that. Additional map specifications and direct manipulation is something we're anticipating after version 1.

Can I import a map of my existing world?

The initial version of Worldspinner is focused on creating new worlds from scratch. We are absolutely planning to allow import of existing maps as an improvement after launch. Given the complexities with file formats, different data types & applications, etc. we want to spend some time discussing this with our users before we nail it down exactly.
